paints, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.
In the studio of Vernon’s mother, in San Diego. Ever since Ted’s and my photo class, I’ve wanted to take a picture of paints with a large aperture. I took many photos of this setting before settling on this photo. Unfortunately I didn’t realize I was using an unnecessarily high ISO (3200) and the image has quite a bit of noise, which is disappointing.

We’ve had a lot of nice cloudy sunsets recently. They aren’t always super colorful, but they really produce a nice fringe of clouds along the skyline.

unhappy kitty, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.
My cat after a trip to the vet yesterday. I rotated/cropped this photo; warmed up the tone); did a bit of sharpening; and played a little with the lights and shadows in curves. She looks like she’s in kitty jail.

ribbon, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.
Christmas present for V with my family tree in the background. The depth of field here is slightly too shallow, but the angle works and the bokeh is cool.

Portrait #2, originally uploaded by Ted Cabeen.
This picture came out interestingly. The focus was good, but the original was too red. I found a new way in Lightroom to adjust the colors (using the photo to identify which hues to adjust) , and was able to bring it down about the amount I wanted without too much trouble. I’m excited about playing with color adjustment in the future.

This is my first attempt at taking a portrait shot and converting it to greyscale. One important thing when framing/editing to greyscale is getting sufficient contrast between the subject and the background. In this case, my grandfather’s shirt was a pretty bright blue. I had to tone the blues down so that he stood out from it properly. It was an interesting challenge.

sugarplums, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.
From a photo shoot we did with two local girls for family holiday pictures. Not a fan of the hand being cut off. I feel like the angle is interesting, but could have been better. I do like their expressions, the color contrast, and the orientation. This was a super fun and challenging project.

We’ve had a lot of pretty clouds the last few weeks. This was early in the morning on my way to work. Like my last cloud picture, I just couldn’t help stopping a snapping a few off on my way.

According to Lightroom, this is the only photo I took on this day, which seems strange. However, I like the depth of field here quite a bit. The point of focus is about halfway between her nose and eyes, which works well to accentuate the size and width of Christina’s eyes, as well as the mid-expression that she’s been caught in here.

A “surprise” portrait of a dear friend who I’ve known since first grade. This photo captured her personality. The focus is a little off, especially in her eye. I’m going to work on street and people photography more — I realized I need to work on it after Ted was clearly more successful in our photography shoot two weekends ago with a local mother and daughter.

This is the content-aware-scaled version of Expanse. I am posting it for comparison to the previous version, and the original. This one is both square and preserves the gray strip at the top. Looking at both, I think I like the cropped 1:1 version better, although this one is interesting as-is.
