light sources, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

San Simeon State Park camp grounds in April. After a small crop and some spot editing (dust on the lens), I gave this image more of a green tint; warmed the temperature slightly to avoid making it too blue/green; upped the shadows and darks in curves; and saturated the reds, oranges, yellows, greens, aquas, and (most especially) blues.

punks, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

A mime-inspired, vaudeville-ish, carnivale-like troupe of characters that call themselves Steam Powered Giraffe. Admittedly, this isn’t the best portrait of four people (blurred hands, closed eyes), but the look on the third man’s face made it worth it to me.

curves, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

A lily in the Balboa Park botanical gardens in San Diego. Still struggling with file degradation; the reds are much stronger in Lightroom. I’m annoyed how much post-post-editing (read: color exaggeration) I have to do to make my images web-ready.

spiked shadows, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

Shot under harsh lighting conditions, which produced these wonderful shadows. Our friend Gwen’s black-and-white photos of plants and trees partially inspired this.

autumn light, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

I love maple leaves. On a technical note, Ted and I discovered that our photos are losing color and details when we convert them from RAW to JPEG. This isn’t all that surprising; however, neither of us really noticed it until Ted created his ‘Arch’ image and I created the image you see above. For whatever reason, these two images came out distinctly different from the versions we see in Lightroom. For posting on Aperture, I added a lot more red to this image than I originally did to make the JPEG version more dynamic, but unfortunately some of the detail in the leaf’s veins may be lost.

paints, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

In the studio of Vernon’s mother, in San Diego. Ever since Ted’s and my photo class, I’ve wanted to take a picture of paints with a large aperture. I took many photos of this setting before settling on this photo. Unfortunately I didn’t realize I was using an unnecessarily high ISO (3200) and the image has quite a bit of noise, which is disappointing.

unhappy kitty, originally uploaded by Shayna Ingram.

My cat after a trip to the vet yesterday. I rotated/cropped this photo; warmed up the tone); did a bit of sharpening; and played a little with the lights and shadows in curves. She looks like she’s in kitty jail.

From a photo shoot we did with two local girls for family holiday pictures. Not a fan of the hand being cut off. I feel like the angle is interesting, but could have been better. I do like their expressions, the color contrast, and the orientation. This was a super fun and challenging project.

off guard, originally uploaded by slingram.

A “surprise” portrait of a dear friend who I’ve known since first grade. This photo captured her personality. The focus is a little off, especially in her eye. I’m going to work on street and people photography more — I realized I need to work on it after Ted was clearly more successful in our photography shoot two weekends ago with a local mother and daughter.

orange cat, originally uploaded by slingram.

A cat who has hung around Ted’s house at various time over the past year and a half. We recently took him to the shelter. I named him Morgan, but his ninja name is Orange Cat. I love the focus in this photo; I just wish his eyes were also in focus (they aren’t in the larger version). This photo would have also been better if there was more light on the right side of Morgan’s face. I warmed up the colors of the photo in Lightroom.

    reflections, originally uploaded by slingram.

I find it amusing there are electrical/telephone poles in this photo, a la Ted’s “Wired.” Perhaps we shall both consider how to take photos of these pervasive yet elusive subjects. It would be nice if the car headlights had been in better focus.

    unmoored, originally uploaded by slingram.

Off the riverwalk in Chicago, in May 2009. I find this to be a compelling shot, but the reason for that remains elusive to me. It seemed as if this buoy or moor, in a long line of ones standing perfectly, was just hanging on by sheer force of will.

a way of life, originally uploaded by slingram.

It took a while to get this shot because I was at an event in a winery’s warehouse. People kept walking through or idling in the shot. While I like it, I’m not totally happy with it. I would have preferred a little more symmetry and it looked much more golden/yellow in tone on the computer I used for editing, so I may need to update this further.

campus flower, originally uploaded by slingram.

Taken with a newly purchased fixed macro lens. A bit of digital darkroom editing brought out the purple in stamen. My first step into macro photography was startlingly hard and both Ted and I agreed that it is a skill we will have to practice a lot.
